: any of various rather hardy cultivated hybrid azaleas that have white to deep red flowers often marked with yellow or orange, result from interbreeding an Old World azalea (Rhododendron flavum) with one or more New World azaleas (as the complex hybrid R. × mortieri), and are commonly treated as forming a distinct hybrid group (R. × gandavense)
